About Us - Our History
Founded: 1923, by Alvina
Hammer Rutzen.
When
it came to caring for the mentally disabled, Alvina Hammer's
ideas differed radically from those of her society. Instead
of institutionalization, Miss Hammer believed that people
with mental disabilities had the right to lead lives in
a loving atmosphere where they would feel secure and develop
self-confidence. Hammer Residences is the result of that
belief.
1947-1974: Evelyn Carlson,
Director and Proprietor.
Hammer expanded under Miss
Carlson's guidance, acquiring additional property, implementing
new programs and adding a significant number of new family
members. Miss Carlson replaced the original Hammer house
with state-of-the-art dormitories, which housed 46 people.
1980s: Hammer leads
change in housing philosophy.
During the 1980s, Hammer promoted
new ideas regarding where and with whom people with disabilities
should live. Many believed that no one should live in
institutions of any kind. In 1986, under the direction
of Roger Deneen, the Board of Directors voted to close
the dormitories and move residents into homes in the community.
1990s-present: refining
operations and continuing the tradition.
In 1991, Jon Thompson became
Hammer's new Chief Executive Officer. He stabilized Hammer's
financial affairs and implemented a management model to
bring strength to the house level. He also enhanced communications
and management through better use of technology.
Tim Nelson, CEO since
1998, is leading Hammer into the 21st century. Having
just completed a three-year strategic plan, Tim and the
Board of Directors are well positioned to continue the
tradition of excellence that Alvina Hammer and Evelyn
Carlson envisioned in our earliest days.
